What Is Occupational Therapy?

For children with developmental, sensory, or motor coordination challenges, everyday activities others take for granted are often difficult, discouraging and frustrating, not just for the child but for their families too. Exploring Sensory integration therapy and early intervention options can be a stressful and confusing endeavor and Playsteps for Developing Kids is here to help you navigate these challenges. Our goal is for your child to reach their full potential.

Pediatric Occupational Therapy uses a variety of early interventions to give children and their families the skills and confidence necessary for success in the “occupations” of their everyday life – whether that’s getting ready in the morning, riding a bike, writing legibly, learning a new move in karate class, drawing or cutting during arts and crafts, eating dinner with the family, navigating a busy playground with peers, or completing any number of other daily tasks.

Our clients range in age from toddlers to teenagers, with most in the three to ten-year-old range. Some have significant medical or educational diagnoses, while others have only mild developmental issues, and may not require any other type of early intervention or  educational, medical, or therapeutic support. We work closely with parents and others involved in each child’s care, with the goal of providing coordinated and collaborative services that are meaningful within the context of the child’s life.

Depending on the needs of the child, our services may include:

Our Process

Children who are referred to the clinic participate in an individually planned evaluation process to determine therapy needs. Following a parent conference, a specific treatment plan is established. Most therapy is provided on an individual basis, although at times small groups are available. We provide therapy at our well-equipped clinic in Menlo Park, expanding to on-site services at schools and preschool programs when needed.
